The Coast Guard Tin Can Bay QF17 is reminding all local boaters of the critical importance of understanding navigation aids, especially in our bays and estuaries where hazards can be prevalent.

Proper knowledge of navigational markers helps prevent accidents and ensures safe passage for everyone on the water. See diagram below.

Navigation markers serve as guides for safe boating. Lateral markers indicate port (left, red) and starboard (right, green) boundaries of channels. Cardinal markers show the safest direction to travel relative to a danger, using compass points.

Special markers highlight features such as mooring areas or restricted zones. Safe water markers signal areas where water is clear of hazards, while dangerous water markers warn of risks like shallow spots or submerged obstacles.

Understanding these aids is vital for all skippers and crew.

In exciting news for QF17, we are proud to congratulate Mrs Lynn Milnes on receiving both the Australian National Medal and the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard's long service award for her outstanding 15 years of dedicated service.

Lynn's commitment and professionalism are an inspiration to our team and the wider community.

Last month, QF17 crews actively participated in the Community Day alongside the local fire service. This event strengthened our connection with residents and showcased our ongoing commitment to safety and support in Tin Can Bay.

We are currently recruiting new crew members and radio operators to join our dedicated team. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit our base near the Snapper Creek boat ramp or contact Karl Hempstead, Public Relations Officer, at 0427 769 504.
