COAST GUARD TIN CAN BAY PAYS TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES ON BALLINA BAR NSW
– IN MEMORIAM – AND EMPHASISE THE USE OF LIFE JACKETS WHEN BOATING ON THE WATER
Karl Hempstead, Public relations Officer – QF17
Marine Rescue NSW volunteers William Ewen, 78 and Frank Petsch, 62 both lost their lives when their rescue vessel capsized while attempting to assist a yacht near the South Ballina break on 5 May 2026.
A solo yachtsman also perished because of this tragedy; it is believed he was not wearing a life jacket when he left his vessel, which probably contributed to his death.
The tragedy has hit home to all volunteers who serve with coast guard and marine rescue units throughout Australia and brings home the dangers related to crossing bars and operating in treacherous seas.
QF17 takes this opportunity to relay their condolences to those families of the three people who lost their lives and send their sincere wishes to them.
The tragedy shows all mariners the importance of wearing a life jacket and specially making sure that any children wear appropriate life vests. Please make yourself familiar with the attached MSQ life jacket legislation (.
On a happier note - Tin Can Bay Coast Guard has been busy attending both the Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach Markets during May.
As a result of attending the markets we may have potentially recruited up to six new people into our ranks, and we thank them for choosing to join us and wish them the best in the near future.
Members of the community were happy to see QF17 attending the markets after a lengthy break. QF17 also thanks those who gave donations to our flotilla and appreciate the support given.
